January Events 1991 – Living History through the Loved Ones

January 13 is Freedom Defenders’ Day, the Lithuanian national holiday. In 1991, Lithuanian citizens demonstrated a massive peaceful resistance against the attempts of Soviet leadership to seize the Vilnius TV Tower, the Radio and Television Committee building, the Parliament building and other objects significant to the coup. Here are some memories and primary sources: The witness of the events tells us that she remembers a strong sense of fear and fright. At that time, Lithuania was an economically stable country, and finally people had an internal, emotional balance. But the events of January 13 shattered the peace. The woman was at home that day and did not physically participate in the strikes, but she strongly hoped that everything would end well and peace and security would prevail in Lithuania. The second witness says that on the night of January 13th he was preparing for his exams session when he heard shots. Fearless people of the time split into two groups of opinions: one for independence, the other for the Soviet system. National awareness has grown in the country.

Sausio 13-oji – Laisvės gynėjų diena, Lietuvos valstybinė šventė. 1991 metais šią dieną įvykęs masinis taikus Lietuvos piliečių pasipriešinimas Sovietų Sąjungos vadovybės bandymui jėga paimti į savo rankas Vilniaus televizijos bokštą, Radijo ir televizijos komiteto pastatą, Parlamento pastatą ir kitus valstybiniam perversmui reikšmingus objektus. Štai keli prisiminimai ir pirminių šaltinių: įvykių liudininkė pasakoja, jog prisimena stiprų baimės bei išgąsčio jausmą. Tuo metu Lietuva buvo ekonomiškai stabili šalis, pagaliau žmonėse atsirado vidinė, emocinė pusiausvyra. Tačiau sausio 13 įvykiai ramybę sutriuškino. Pašnekovė tą dieną buvo namuose ir fiziškai nedalyvavo streikuose, tačiau labai stipriai tikėjosi, kad viskas baigsis gerai ir Lietuvoje įsivyraus ramybė, saugumas. Antras liudininkas pasakoja, jog naktį sausio 13 d. ruošdamasis sesijai išgirdo šūvius. Nejautė baimės, to meto žmonės išsiskyrė į dviejų nuomonių grupes: vieni už nepriklausomybę, kiti – už tarybų santvarką. Šalyje išaugo tautinis sąmoningumas.
