January Events 1991 – Tanks as a Playground

My dad Zbigniew Griniewicz shared some moments from the period of January 11-13, 1991. He was 11 years old at the time. Dad remembers that on the 11th of January military equipment was moving along Laisvės Avenue. Although television was reporting on the events that were going on in the capital, Landsbergis’ speech, he and his peers did not really understand the seriousness of the entire situation or what was going on at the time. On the 12th day, the Press House was invaded, and the tanks and other military equipment were standing there. On the 13th of January the cold was very strong, in spite of the cold, Dad and his brother ran to the Television Tower. Russian soldiers allowed the boys to climb on tanks. People at the time were sharing food, hot sandwiches, cabbage, tea. Dad was joking that he was there just to eat. Later, their uncle appeared and sent the boys home. At 9 p.m. there was TV news broadcast, shooting was heard from outside, and the sounds of tanks rolling on the streets. Dad remembers that at first he thought he was hearing fireworks in the sky that night, unfortunately it wasn’t them. The next day, the smell of gunpowder was felt outside.

Mano tėtis Zbigniew Griniewicz pasidalino 1991 metų sausio 11-13 akimirkomis. Jam tuo metu buvo 11 metų. Tėtis prisimena, jog 11 dieną per Laisvės prospektą važiavo karinė technika. Nors televizija informavo apie įvykius sostinėje, V. Landsbergio kalbą, jis ir jo bendraamžiai iš tikrųjų nesuprato visos situacijos rimtumo, kas tuo metu vyko. 12 dieną buvo užgrobti Spaudos rūmai, stovėjo tankai ir kita karinė technika. 13 dieną spaudė didelis šaltis, nepaisant to, tėtis su broliu nubėgo prie Televizijos bokšto. Rusų kariai leido berniukams palaipioti ant tankų. Žmonės tuo metu dalinosi maistu, karštais sumuštiniais, kopūstais, arbata. Tėtis juokaudamas sako, jog atėjo tenai tik, kad pavalgytų. Vėliau atėjęs jų dėdė nusiuntė berniukus namo. 21 valandą rodė žinias, lauke šaudė, girdėjosi, kaip važiuoja tankai. Tėtis prisimena, kad tą vakarą iš pradžių manė, kad danguje šaudė fejerverkus, deja, tai buvo ne jie. Kitą dieną lauke buvo jaučiamas parako kvapas.
